The Bowl and Brat was fairly quiet when they entered, not usual for a Wednesday evening, and had he been alone, Peter would most likely have stayed downstairs to eat and chat with a couple of people he knew there. But with Cecil, he definitely wanted to be upstairs where they could steal kisses and whisper about getting a room, something he suspected Cecil was still too nervous to discuss downstairs. So he stopped at the bar to place their orders and said they’d dine upstairs.

The upstairs dining room was just crowded enough to be comfortable without being so full it was hard to find a table. Unfortunately, all of the empty tables were in the middle of the room again. Peter had been hoping for something a bit more private, particularly as Cecil seemed more nervous than usual. But they were barely seated when Cecil leaned over and murmured, “Is it done to take food to one of the rooms?”

“It is indeed, when one wants a bit more privacy. I’ll arrange it.” He squeezed Cecil’s hand then went to find Travers and arrange for the key to a room and have their food sent there, adding a bottle of good wine to go with it. If Cecil was in the mood for a romantically private dinner, Peter was going to do whatever he could to make it happen. As he returned to their table, Cecil slid his hand over and Peter rested his on top of it, hoping that was what Cecil was hoping for. “The room will be ready in a few minutes. Travers will tell us when it is.”

“Do you really think you’ll be able to make progress with Mrs. Lennox?”

So that was what was worrying him, or at least part of it. “Yes, I’m sure I can,” Peter said with a bit more confidence than he felt. “I did support her idea for a boarding house, after all, and she won’t want to lose a tenant, especially one related to a title, if she can help it.”

Cecil sighed. “If I get thrown out, who knows where Father will decide to put me.”

So that was the real worry. “You know you’re always welcome to stay at number 19. And besides, you’ll have money of your own coming in soon, and then you’ll be able to choose where you live. Mr. Higgins was already planning where he was going to begin advertising the new prints.” Cecil made a small, resigned sort of noise. “And you won’t need to worry that Mr. Higgins will hear whatever lies your father is spreading. First off, he won’t believe rumors unless he has someone he trusts verify them. He’s done too much work with artists who’ve become notorious in their own small ways for that.” That seemed to calm Cecil a little, so Peter expanded on the theme. “And he probably won’t hear them anyway. Remember, you’re publishing as an anonymous gentleman, so no one will come running to him with the gossip.
